Bhubaneswar: Senior IPS officer B K Sharma on Monday formally took charge as the new Director General of Prisons.
The 1986-batch officer replaced Additional DG Arun Ray, who has been attached to the State Police Headquarters.
“There are many pending works to be taken up. My predecessor has done a good job on it. Some new jail construction work is on which needs to be completed. I also have to expedite the new Jail Manual making task,” Sharma said.
He said priority will be given to improving the lifestyle and basic amenities of jail inmates. Yoga and spiritual training will be imparted in a bid to reform them.
The DG (Prisons) said adequate number of CCTV cameras will be installed in jails across the state with special emphasis on safety of women inmates.
Stating that strengthening security in jails will be his top priority, Sharma hinted at jail reforms.
“Issues and problems concerning jail staff will also be addressed,” he added.
Prior to this assignment, Sharma was the Special DG of State Crime Branch.
