Bhubaneswar: Considering the inconvenience faced by ‘Divyangs’ (physically challenged) in disposing their domestic wastes in the city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a move to collect the garbage from their doorsteps.
As part of the initiative, the BMC officials on Sunday started a drive to stick signages and stickers on the walls of the Divyangs who were identified in a survey earlier. The drive, which was carried out in three zones under the BMC, will cover all wards in the city, sources said.
Deputy Commissioner (environment), BMC, Subhendu Kumar Sahu supervised the drive in Tapoban slum under south-west zone, zonal deputy commissioner Mahendra Kumar Badhei in Pandav Nagar under south-east zone and sanitary inspector in north zone.
The BMC launched the initiative as the Divyangs were facing problems in coming out of their houses to give their household wastes to the garbage collecting vehicles of the BMC, said deputy commissioner Sahu. The stickering work was carried out with assistance from Centre for Advocacy and Research, he added.
Stating that BMC is the first municipal body in the state to have launched the drive, he said Anganwadi workers would be involved in the work in future for the benefits of the physically challenged persons in the Capital City.
