Bhubaneswar: In a bid to minimise pollution of riverbeds due to idol immersion, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared three temporary ponds on the banks of River Kuakhai, Kushabhadra and Daya on the outskirts of the city.
According to BMC sources, two artificial ponds have been constructed scientifically by its Engineering Wing Division-II and one by its Division-I to reduce pollution. The pond on Daya riverbed is 50-ft X 20-ft with a depth of 5-ft while the other pond is close to Tankapani Bridge on a surface of 50-ft X 35-ft with a depth of 5-ft.
The size of the pond prepared by Division-I on Kuakhai riverbank is 130-ft X 80-ft with a depth of 10-ft.
Temporary light arrangements have been made and approach roads laid at the immersion ponds.
The lighting arrangements, done by generators will supply uninterrupted power during night and evening hours for hassle-free immersion.
Engineering Wing of the civic body has also taken elaborate precautions while preparing the temporary ponds in deference to stipulations laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board to minimise riverine pollution to the advantage of people using the water downstream.
