Berhampur: One month after an engineering student went missing in Odisha’s Ganjam district, his body was found near a railway track with his family members alleging that he was murdered.
The youth, identified as Hemant Mallick, hailed from Rakeshpanka village in Mohana police station limit of Gajapati district. While doing a diploma in civil engineering in an engineering college for the last two years, was working at an eatery in Kanisi under Golanthara area of Berhampur since August this year.
When the college was closed after his fourth-semester examination, Hemant did not go home and stayed back to work at the eatery as the family was facing financial problems, sources said.
However, the youth went missing on September 11 evening after which his brother Sukanta lodged a complaint with the police on September 13. He alleged that there was a fight between Hemant and another employee at the eatery before he went missing. His mobile phone was also switched off.
After Hemant’s body was found near railway tracks in Haladiapadar area, Sukanta alleged that his brother was murdered by the eatery owner and an employee. The body was thrown near the railway track to give the impression that he had committed suicide, he claimed.
Inspector in-charge of Golanthara police station Bibekananda Mahanta said that a case has been registered and an investigation into the incident is in progress.
