Bhubaneswar: Boxing coach from Odisha Braja Bhushan Mohanty on Tuesday received the prestigious Dronacharya Award from President Ram Nath Kovind at a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on the occasion of National Sports Day.
Under his guidance, several boxers like Shiva Thapa, Dingko Singh, Gurucharan Singh and Vikas Krishan Yadav have clinched medals for the country in several major international events.
Mohanty was instrumental in spotting L Devendra Singh, who received the Arjuna award.
A resident of Badakhemundi in Berhampur, he took training in boxing coaching from Patiala in 1992 and joined as a coach in defence.
Following retirement from defence service in 2013, he was appointed chief coach of Jharkhand boxing team and henceforth served as coach of Indian boxing team from 2002 till 2011.
There was more for Odisha to cheer about during the function as Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) was conferred with the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar for playing a major role in getting the infrastructure ready for the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in record 90 days. The mega sporting event was held at the Kalinga Stadium here from July 6 to 9.
IDCO Chairman-cum-Managing Director Sanjay Kumar Singh received the award from the President.
Besides, IDCO is a promoter of Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League. It is the only state PSU-owned franchisee in the tournament.
