Koraput: A woman had to be shifted to four hospitals across Odisha following an alleged medical negligence at Jypore district headquarters hospital (DHH).

The reason: The doctor who performed the family planning operation on the woman, identified as Sabitri Majhi of Parata village, allegedly left a broken needle inside her uterus while stitching the surgical cut.

An X-ray, which was conducted later after she complained of pain in her abdomen,  revealed the presence of the broken needle. Sabitri was then referred to SLN Medical College and Hospital in Koraput.

The doctors there, however, referred her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. She was again shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

“The doctor left a broken needle in my body while performing the surgery hurriedly. I had to undergo untold misery because of his mistake,” said Sabitri.

The ASHA worker, who took Sabitri to the Jeypore hospital for the operation, said “Following the X-ray report, the doctors immediately asked us to shift her to Berhampur for better treatment and arranged an ambulance for us.”

Admitting to the serious medical negligence, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Makarand Beura admitted said that the doctor tried but failed to remove the needle which broke while the surgical cut was being stitched. “The patient was later sent to SLN Medical College from where she was taken to Berhampur and then Cuttack. The needle has now been removed and her health condition is stable,” said Beura.
