Uttar Pradesh: The counting of votes for nine seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly bypolls is ongoing. According to the trends around 2pm on Saturday (November 23), the BJP-RLD alliance is leading in six constituencies. The Samajwadi Party is ahead in two seats. Samajwadi Party leader Naseem Solanki won the Sishamau bypoll.
The Meerapur, Kundarki, Sisamau, Katehari, Phulpur, Majhawan, Ghaziabad, Karhal and Khair seats went to bypolls in Uttar Pradesh on November 20. While the results will not directly impact the composition of the 403-member state Assembly, the contest is being seen as the first major face-off between the ruling BJP and its political rivals since the last Lok Sabha election.
BJP’s Sanjeev Sharma is leading from Ghaziabad, Ramveer Singh leading from Kundarki, Deepak Patel leading in Phulpur, Surender Diler leading in Khair, Shuchismita Maurya leading in Majhawan, and RLD’s Mithlesh pal is leading in Meerapur.
On the other side, Samajwadi Party’s Tej Pratap Singh and Shobhawati Verma are leading from Karhal and Katehari seats respectively.\
BJP’s comeback in muslim-dominated UP constituency
Political analysts opined that the BJP had made a stunning comeback in Muslim-dominated Kundarki constituency. The Kundarki assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh, where Muslims make up 2.23 lakh (62 per cent) of the 3.83 lakh voters, has witnessed a political shift.
The BJP last won this seat in 1993. Since then, it has been held by other parties, particularly the Samajwadi Party (SP). In 2022, SP’s Zia ur Rehman had secured a landslide victory with a margin of over 43,000 votes. BJP candidate Ramveer Singh is leading by an impressive margin of over 46,000 votes as of the 9th round of counting was underway for the seat on Saturday.
Bengal bypoll: It’s a clean sweep for TMC
Trinamool Congress (TMC) is in for a clean sweep in the bypolls in Bengal. It has won four seats and established irreversible leads in the other two. TMC has won Sitai, Madarihat, Haroa and Naihati, while the party is leading in the remaining constituencies of Medinipur and Taldangra.
NDA bags seats in Bihar
Meanwhile, in Bihar, NDA candidates Deepa Kumari and Manorama Devi won the bypoll from the Imamganj and Belganj seat respectively. Kumari secured 53,435 votes defeating RLD’s Raushan Kumar by a margin of 5945 votes while Devi won by a margin of over 21,000 votes defeating RLD’s Vishwanath Kumar Singh.
