Bhubaneswar: A minor boy was critically injured after a car ran him over while he was sleeping on a pavement in Unit-II area of Odisha capital on Monday night.

The injured child has been admitted to the Capital Hospital here for treatment.

According to sources, the car veered onto the footpath after the driver lost control over the steering wheel near a slum behind Odisha Legislative Assembly and came to a halt after hitting a boundary wall. The driver and two other occupants of the car fled leaving the car behind. It is being suspected that they had consumer liquor.

Tension prevailed in the area following the accident as slum dwellers detained the car and demanded compensation for the family of the injured child. A resident of the slum told the media that they reached the spot on hearing a loud noise and saw a man in a black T-shirt and two others in white T-shirts fleeing. They then saw a young boy limping toward the middle of the road and collapsing.

The Capital Police have started a probe and efforts are on to nab the driver, the sources added.
