New Delhi: Oxfam India is set to come under Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) scanner after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recommended a probe by the central agency into alleged violations of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) by the global non-profit organisation.

A variety of reasons — including COVID-19 pandemic, amendments to FCRA by the government in 2020 and foreigners’ division of MHA being short-staffed — resulted in the ministry rejecting Oxfam India’s FCRA renewal application in 2021, reported The Indian Express.

FCRA registration of Oxfam India, along with those of 5,932 other NGOs, lapsed at midnight on December 31, 2021.

Oxfam India, a member of global confederation of 21 Oxfams across the world, is a non-profit organization working to support child education, empowering women and fighting against inequality in India.

The Central government registered Oxfam India as a ‘non-profit organization under Section 8 of the Indian Companies Act, 2013.’
