New Delhi: The Centre has filed a plea in the Supreme Court stating that the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9, were not getting basic facilities.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in its plea before the top court, said due to the lack of proper accommodation and transportation the CISF personnel were facing a lot of difficulties.

The Centre has said that the Bengal government must provide proper facilities for the CISF personnel. Anything less, it said, would amount to contempt of court and action should be initiated. In its petition filed before the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the troops are currently staying at the city’s CISF unit in the city suburbs. They have to travel for one hour to reach the hospital, NDTV reported.

This way, it is difficult to discharge the duties effectively. In case of emergencies, they would be unable to respond promptly and mobilise troops immediately, the ministry has told the court.

Notably, on August 21, the Supreme Court had asked the CISF to take over the security of the RG Kar Hospital.
