Bhubaneswar: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 4 crore for genetic improvement of fish at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneswar, said Union Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Pratap Chandra Sarangi.
Reviewing the field facilities at ICAR-CIFA, Sarangi said the grant has been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The Centre targets production of 22 million tonne of fish by 2024, he added.
He also announced a grant of Rs 366 crore for fish farming to the states under the Yojana. Of the grant, the Centre will provide Rs 110 crore while the states and the beneficiaries will contribute Rs 246 crore and Rs 180 crore respectively.
It may be mentioned that ICAR-CIFA is one of the premier institutes in the country that has been engaged in research on 25 species of fish and pearl culture.
