New Delhi: China lectured India on Thursday and advised New Delhi to follow rules on Taiwan, which Beijing claims as a breakaway region.
Weeks after three former service chiefs visited the self-governed island, the Chinese Foreign ministry said India should follow the “one China principle” and not have “military and security” cooperation with Taiwan.
Without directly naming India, China’s Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said they “firmly oppose” such visits.
“China firmly opposes all forms of official interaction between the Taiwan authorities and countries having diplomatic relations with China,” said Wang.
“We hope the country concerned will abide by the one-China principle, prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, and refrain from having any form of military and security cooperation with Taiwan,” Wang said, responding to a question from Associated Press of Pakistan.
There was no immediate reaction from Indian officials.
Former Army chief Manoj Naravane, Navy chief Karambir Singh and Air chief RKS Bhadauria visited Taipei and delivered talks at the Ketagalan Forum’s 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue on August 8.
President Tsai Ing-wen delivered the opening address at the event which was organised by the Taiwanese Foreign ministry.
Indo-Chinese relations deteriorated after the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020.
Though India follows the one-China principle, New Delhi has stopped reiterating it in bilateral documents for more than a decade. The Indian government has maintained unofficial ties with Taiwan.
