Sambalpur: A young girl allegedly committed suicide after her lover went back on his words to marry her in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
According to police sources, the girl, identified as Deepa Pradhan of Tipilei village under Bhuban police limits in the district, was pursuing Graduation in English Honours under Sambalpur University.
Deepa was in a relationship with Chintu Dalei of her village for some time. Last year, they decided to get married and informed their families. Both the families finalised their marriage in presence of village elders.
But the marriage was postponed on the request of Chintu who wanted to solemnise the event after completing his under-construction house. On Saturday, Deepa’s family members found that she had committed suicide by hanging herself in her room.
On being informed, a team from Bhuban police station went to the house and sent Deepa’s body for post-mortem. They have registered a case on the basis of a complaint filed by Deepa’s father and started investigation.
Deepa’s family alleged that Chintu had called Deepa over phone a few days back and broke up the marriage. Unable to bear the mental depression, she resorted to the extreme step. They also said they had found the names of Chintu and another girl and their phone numbers written on her palm when they found her dead.
