Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra has welcome the Supreme Court stay on Odisha Universities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Speaking to media persons, here on Saturday, on the stay, Mishra said the Act was an infringement on autonomy of universities in the state. It would have affected the operation and administration of higher educational institutions in impartial manner.

He further said the state government passed the Bill in the Assembly due to its majority despite protest from opposition parties. In fact, the Law department had also raised its objection to the Act, he added.

On Friday, the apex court issued the stay on the Act for three months after hearing a petition filed against it by University Grants Commission (UGC). The court sought a reply from the Odisha government in three months and set the date for next hearing on the matter after two months.

Earlier, the Orissa High Court had given a clean chit to the state government by upholding the validity of the Act. The UGC moved the Supreme Court on the ground that the Act was violative of the UGC Regulations 2018 and the judgment of the High Court was erroneous.
