New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday demanded immediate resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and imposition of President’s rule in the northeastern state.
“Manipur is burning, women are raped, naked, paraded, and horrific violence is taking place. But the PM kept quiet for so long until today…he only gave a statement outside the Parliament,” Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said in Rajya Sabha.
“We want a detailed discussion on Manipur and PM Modi should make an elaborate statement on the same in the House. We also demand immediate resignation of Manipur Chief Minister and an imposition of President’s Rule,” he added.
Ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament, PM Modi addressed the media and said that the incident was “shameful for any civilised society.” “My heart is filled with pain and anger. The viral video from Manipur is shameful..who did this and who is responsible is another issue but this has put our nation to shame. I appeal to all chief minsters to tighten law and order in their respective states. Whether it is Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh or Manipur…a woman’s honour is above all politics.”
“I assure the nation that no guilty person will be spared. Law will take its course with all its might. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven,” he added.
Notably, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till Friday after convening thrice on the first day of the Monsoon session on Thursday amid Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the Manipur violence in the presence of PM Modi. Kharge even urged chairperson Jagdeep Dhankar to “suspend all other business” to discuss Manipur.
