Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Bhubaneswar on Saturday sentenced a former welfare extension officer (WEO) in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj to rigorous imprisonment for 4 years in a bribe case.
The Vigilance had received a complaint that Ludasini Nayak, then serving as Welfare Extension Officer at Badampahad in Mayurbhanj, was demanding bribe to conduct an inquiry and submit report to District Welfare Officer (DWO), Nayagarh regarding an inter-caste marriage.
Following the complaint, the Vigilance officials had caught Nayak red-handed while accepting the bribe and arrested her. Later, the Vigilance submitted the charge sheet in the court.
After hearing the case, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar convicted Nayak and sentenced her to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 4 years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. In default of payment of fine, she has to undergo further RI for 2 months.
The Court also sentenced her to undergo RI for 3 years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for the offence U/s 7 PC Act, 1988. In default of payment of fine, she would undergo further RI for 2 months. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the court ruled.
Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for dismissal of Nayak following her conviction.
