Pune: An 11-day complete lockdown has been announced in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and some parts of rural Pune from July 13 to July 23 following the highest number of COVID-19 cases reported in a day.
According to a Health official, 1,803 fresh coronavirus cases were registered on Thursday to push the overall tally of Pune district to 34,399. The death toll in the district climbed to 978 following 34 new casualties.
“Complete lockdown announced for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and some parts of Rural Pune from 13th July to 23rd July. Only shops related to essential services like dairy and medical stores and hospitals will remain open,” Pune divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar was quoted as saying by ANI.
Of the 1,803 new positive cases, 1,032 were reported from within Pune municipal corporation (PMC) limits, taking the number to 24,977.
Pimpri-Chinchwad region reported 573 new cases, taking the total count in the industrial township to 6,982.
In the rural parts of the district, the positive cases have gone up to 3,138.
The COVID-19 tally in Maharashtra, India’s worst-hit state, rose to 2,30,599 with the death toll (9,667) inching close to five figures.
