New Delhi: With the highest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 positive cases, India’s affected tally went past 51-lakh mark to stand at 51,18,253 on Thursday.

The gap between India, the second worst-hit country, and the US, the worst-hit country, is steadily reducing. The US has about 69 lakh people who have been infected by the virus. India is all set to overtake the US as the worst-affected country in less than one month, if the current trend continues.

About 1,132 people have succumbed to infection in the last 24 hours in India, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

A total of 83,198 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 so far with the country reporting more than 1,000 daily deaths in a row for over a fortnight. India’s case fatality rate due to COVID-19 has, however, dropped to 1.63 per cent.

Presently, the deaths per million population in India is 60 while the world average remains 121.

About 78.64 per cent (40,25,080) people have recovered from the infection so far with 82,719 being discharged on Wednesday. Another 19.73 per cent (10,09,976) are still under treatment.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 6,05,65,728 samples have been tested for COVID-19, which includes Wednesday’s 11,36,613.
