Toronto: Canada’s head of public health agency has advised people on safe sex practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chief Public Health Officer Teresa Tam stated while “sexual health is an important part of our overall wellbeing,” the safest way is to consider “yourself alone”.
For sexual relationships outside your bubble, she suggested ways to reduce the risk, starting with establishing trust and monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms, and also identifying whether your partner is in the high-risk category with underlying medical conditions, weakened immune systems and problems with obesity.
She recommended wearing of mask, condom and avoiding kissing or face-to-face contacts. She also asked people to avoid drinking excessively as this can lead to making bad decisions.
“Current evidence indicates there is a very low likelihood of contracting the novel coronavirus through semen or vaginal fluids,” she added.
