New Delhi: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) director Randeep Guleria said on Tuesday that the COVID-19 third wave may not be as severe as the first two waves in India. He said that fewer COVID-19 cases indicate that the vaccines have been effective in controlling the spread of the virus.
“It is unlikely that the third wave of COVID-19 of a magnitude comparable to the first and second will hit India. With time, the pandemic will take an endemic form. We’ll continue to get cases but the severity will be highly reduced,” news agency PTI quoted Guleria as saying.
India has witnessed a sharp fall in its daily Covid-19 cases for a week now. The country registered 7,579 infections — the lowest in 543 days. This was the second consecutive day that new cases remained below 10,000.
According to Guleria, right now there is no need for booster doses since there is no surge in COVID-19 cases. He said that the government should focus on vaccinating those who have still not taken a single dose and also on those whose is yet to take the second jab.
However, the AIIMS director advised people to be cautious. “We have to be watchful and careful of all the viruses in the world in this world of quick mobility,” Guleria said.
Guleria said this while speaking at the book launch event of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) director-general Balram Bhargava’s ‘Going Viral: Making of Covaxin — The Inside Story’.
