Wales defeated a higher ranked India 3-2 to register first ever win against the team in the opener of the women’s hockey Gold Coast Games.
India defense looked weak as Wales took the lead in the seventh minute with Lisa Daley scoring the first one. India grabbed opportunities in the form of penalty corners, but to no avail.
Wales, ranked 26th, scored once again in the 26th minute after earning a penalty stroke for wrong tackling.
India bounced back in the third quarter with skipper Rani showing her skills as she netted two goals in the 34th (penalty corner) and 41st minute respectively.
In the last quarter, India looked for chances as they got back to back penalty corners. However, Wales had the last laugh as they scored the winner with only three minutes to go for the final quarter.
