Cyclone Asani: Depression In 3 Hours; Heavy Rain To Lash Odisha, Squall@100Kmph From May 10

Bhubaneswar: The possible cyclonic storm Asani is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast from May 10 evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

Notably, the low-pressure area over South Andaman Sea and neighbourhood became well-marked and persisted over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea at 8.30 am on Saturday. It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 3 hours and further into a cyclonic storm over eastcentral Bay of Bengal on May 8.

Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Scientist Umashankar Das said that the system is expected to move in the northwest direction till the evening of May 10. After reaching westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast. “From May 10, wind speed over Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh will be 70-80 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions. Odisha, North Andhra and the west-central Bay of Bengal will be affected,” he added.

RAINFALL WARNING

MAY 10: Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to commence from the evening at many places in coastal Odisha. Heavy rainfall (7 -11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.

MAY 11: Light to moderate rainfall is very likely at many places in coastal Odisha while heavy rain (7-11cm) is expected at one or two places in Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack.

WIND WARNING

MAY 9: Gale wind speed reaching 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph is likely to prevail over central parts of Bay of Bengal

MAY 10: Gale wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is likely to prevail around the system center over westcentral and adjoining northwest and eastcentral Bay of Bengal

MAY 11: Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely to prevail over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal.

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off Odisha coast.

SEA CONDITION

MAY 9-10: Sea condition is likely to become high over central parts of Bay of Bengal on May 9 and over westcentral and adjoining northwest and eastcentral Bay of Bengal on May 10.

May 11: Sea condition is likely to become high over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen have been advised to return to the coast by the morning and May 10 and not to venture into the deep sea area over central parts of Bay of Bengal on May 9 and 10 and over northwest Bay of Bengal on May 10 and 11.
