Cyclone Bulbul has started making landfall near Sagar Island in South 24 Paraganas district in West Bengal.
The process will take another two hours, according to India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) latest bulletin released at 11.30 pm. Part of the eye is currently over the land.
The wind is gushing at a speed of 115-125 kmph. The cyclone is reportedly travelling towards Khepupara Bangladesh. It has, however, weakened into a severe cyclone, down from the ‘very severe’ category.
Kolkata airport operations have been shut down till Sunday morning as wind speeds reached 70-80 kmph. More than 1.2 lakh people have already been evacuated from the vulnerable coastal areas in West Bengal.
The next six hours are said to be crucial, reports private weather forecaster Skymet.
