Cyclone ‘Dana’ May Hit Odisha In 48 Hours; Check Rain, Wind Alerts & Likely Impact In 11 Dists

Bhubaneswar: The depression over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal was about 700 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha) on Tuesday morning, the India Meteorological Department said in its midday bulletin

“It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23 over eastcentral Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, continuing to move northwestwards, it is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over northwest Bay of Bengal by October 24 morning and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during night of October 24 and October 25 morning as a severe cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph,” it added.

According to the weather agency, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may commence at isolated places in Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri districts on October 23.

Red warning has been issued for some places of the state during the subsequent 2 days.

October 24

Red warning (Take Action)

Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) falls may occur in Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur.

Orange warning (Be Prepared to take action)

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is also likely at isolated places in Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, and Ganjam.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware)

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal and Gajapati districts.

October 25

Red warning (Take Action)

Scattered heavy to very heavy falls (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) may continue at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak districts.

Orange warning (Be Prepared to take action)

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is also likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware)

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at isolated places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri and Ganjam.

On October 26, yellow warning of heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) continues for isolated places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh districts.

Wind Warning

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph is very likely to commence along and off Odisha coast from October 23 evening. It would gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from October 24 morning and reaching 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph from October 24night till October 25 morning and decrease gradually thereafter.

Sea condition is likely to remain rough to very rough from October 23 evening and would become high to very high from October 24 evening to October 25 forenoon and improve gradually thereafter. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into sea in adjoining areas of Westcentral Bay of Bengal on October 23-24, North Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha from October 23-25.

Distant Cautionary Signal No.1 (DC-1) hoisted at all ports of Odisha.

Expected Impact (Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Cuttack and Dhenkanal)

>> Major damage to thatched houses/ huts.

>> Roof tops may blow off. Unattached metal sheets may fly.

>> Minor damage to power and communication lines.

>> Major damage to Kutcha and some damage to Pucca roads.

>> Flooding of escape routes.

>> Possibilities of damage to vulnerable structure.

>> Breaking of tree branches and uprooting of trees.

>> Moderate damage to banana and papaya trees.

>> Large dead limbs blown from trees.

>> Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation and wind.

>> Damage to embankments/ salt pans.

>> Localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas.

>> Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.

>> Disruption of traffic in major cities and roadways due to water logging in roads and poor visibility due to heavy rain leading to increased travel time and incidents

>> Localized landslides/mudslides/landslips/mud slips/land sinks/mud sinks.

>> Likely disruption of marine and inland water transportation like small boats and trawlers. It may lead to riverine flooding in some river catchments.
