Bhubaneswar: Schools in 19 districts will remain closed on Saturday in view of cyclonic storm Jawad, which is likely to reach the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast by Saturday morning and make landfall along the Odisha coast near Puri by Sunday noon.
The district where the schools have been directed to be closed are Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Koraput, Rayagada, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Malkangiri and Mayurbhanj
The School and Mass Education has written to the DEOs of the 19 districts asking them to ensure that the orders are implemented.
The government took the decision to ensure the safety of the children. Teachers and staff, however, have to attend school to assist the government in case of any need.
Earlier in the day, Ganjam and Puri administrations had ordered closure of schools. “As per kind instructions of Collector & District Magistrate, Ganjam, the schools of Ganjam District shall remain closed on 04.12.2021 in view of upcoming Cyclone “JAWAD”. The teaching and non-teaching staff will attend the schools as usual and remain alert to attend the instructions of the administration to provide all sorts of cooperation. The instructions shall be strictly adhered to,” a notification issued by the District Education Office, Ganjam, said.
Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada are likely to be most affected by the storm.
Red warning has been issued for Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati and Jagatsinghpur and these places may receive over 20 cm of rainfall.
