Cyclone Tej Brewing In Arabian Sea; Will It Head For Indian Coast?

Mumbai: A low-pressure area over south-east and adjoining south-west Arabian Sea has developed into a depression and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 21, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

The second cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea this year will be called ‘Tej’, according to the formula used for naming cyclones in Indian Ocean region, reported PTI.

IMD has predicted that the cyclonic storm may further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on October 22 and move towards south coasts of Oman and Yemen.

However, storms deviate at times from the predicted track and intensity, as was seen in the case of Cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea in June. It initially moved in a north-northwest direction before changing course to make landfall between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan.

In case of Cyclone Tej, private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said that a majority of models indicate the storm is heading for Yemen-Oman coast.

The Global Forecast System models, however, suggest a recurvature while positioned over the deep central parts of Arabian Sea, steering the system towards Pakistan and Gujarat coast.
