Bhubaneswar: Cyclone ‘Tej’, brewing over the Arabian Sea, is expected to transform into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm before noon on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.

“Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Tej lay centered at 5.30 am over westcentral & adjoining southwest Arabian Sea, about 240 km ESE of Socotra (Yemen), 600 km SSE of Salalah (Oman), and 620 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). It is very likely to intensify further into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the forenoon of October 22,” the weather agency tweeted this morning.

According to Zoo Earth, Cyclone Tej could strengthen into a Super Cyclonic Storm in the next 24 hours and weaken slightly before making landfall near the Oman–Yemen border on Tuesday. “The last cyclone to make landfall in this region was Cyclone Mekunu, over 5 years ago in 2018,” it added.

Senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls also posted on X that Tej will become an extremely severe cyclonic storm and pass near Socotra on Sunday before “making landfall in the Dhofar Governorate, Oman or AlMahra Governorate, Yemen later Tuesday, local time.”

Giving an update on Tej, Skymet Weather official Mahesh Palawat wrote on X, “Cyclone Tej is over Southwest Arabism Sea. We do not expect any impact over the west coast of the country. Maharashtra and Gujarat are safe. No need to worry. It will head to Oman/Yeman. Landfall may be in the morning of October 25.”
