Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its morning bulletin on Saturday.
Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area is likely to form over the same region around Sunday. It is likely to concentrate into a depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 8, it said.
Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal. The details of its path and intensification will be provided after the formation of low pressure area. The system is under constant watch and being monitored regularly, the IMD added. It is not yet clear whether the system will have any impact on Odisha.
The system will be named as Cyclone ‘Mocha’ if it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.
The IMD made the following forecasts in connection with the system :
Light/moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Sunday and heavy to very heavy rainfall during May 8 to 10.
Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea on Sunday.
Wind speed would gradually increase becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during May 8 and 9 and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and north Andaman Sea from May 10 onwards.
