Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal around November 5, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday.

“Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded isolated weak to moderate convection lay over central & south Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea,” according to IMD’s Tropical Weather Outlook.

It added that there is very low probability of cyclogenesis (formation of depression) during the next 168 hours.

The weather agency, however, has issued no warning for Odisha till November 8. While dry weather may prevail on November 3-4, light to moderate rain/thunderstorm is likely to resume at one or two places in Ganjam and Puri districts on November 5 and continue in some coast districts till November 8.

There will be no large change in the maximum and minimum temperature in the state during the next 5 days, it added.

In its Extended Range Forecast on October 31, the national forecaster had earlier informed about formation of a trough of low over south Bay of Bengal with formation of a low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal by November 6. “There is also low probability of its intensification into a depression over southwest by November 6 off Tamil Nadu coast during first half of week 2 (November 7-11),” it added.

The IMD’s dynamical statistical model indicated 30-40% probability of cyclogenesis over southwest BoB off Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts/Comorin area during week 1 and 20-30% (low) probability of cyclogenesis over southwest BoB off Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts and 30-40% probability of cyclogenesis over southeast BoB & adjoining south Andaman sea during the week 2.

Last month, Odisha was struck by Cyclone Dana, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the 1999 super cyclone that killed 10,000. Though the Mohan Majhi declared ‘zero casualty’ in the cyclone, it left a trail of destruction, with several trees uprooted, blocking roads, and massive damage to electrical installations.
