Bhubaneswar: Several districts of Odisha are witnessing heavy rainfall since Sunday morning under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal by September 20 under the influence of the cyclonic circulation formed over southeast and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal on Saturday, the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.

A yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been sounded in Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Gajapati whereas 21 districts were issued yellow warning for thunderstorm and lightning.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is likely at one or two places in Boudh, Angul, Sonepur, Kandhamal and Kalahandi on September 20. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) alert has also been sounded for one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada and Rayagada during this period.

Under the influence of the anticipated low-pressure area and strong monsoon current, squally weather with gusty surface wind speeds reaching 45 to 55 kmph is likely over the deep sea of westcentral adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 20, and along and off Odisha coast and west central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 21 and 22.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea area of west-central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 20.

According to SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), the system was likely to move in a north-westerly direction towards western Odisha and Chhattisgarh from September 21 but would have its impact on coastal Odisha up to September 20.

Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall would commence from September 19 afternoon and continue till the night of September 22 over Odisha. Initially, moderate rainfall would be experienced in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada and Koraput on September 19 and 20 after which the rains would shift to north Odisha from the night of September 20.

Western Odisha districts could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in one or two places on September 21 and 22, the bulletin said, adding Bhubaneswar city could get moderate rainfall on September 20 and 21, it added.
