Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic storm is likely to form over Bay of Bengal and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts on May 26 evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.

“Low-Pressure area in Bay of Bengal is likely to move northeastwards and concentrate into a Depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by morning of May 24. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move northeastwards, intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm over eastcentral Bay of Bengal by May 25 morning. Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards and reach near Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 evening as a Severe Cyclonic Storm,” the weather agency said.

The MeT office has also issued the forecasted track of the system.

The latest ECMWF model also shows that the anticipated cyclone can make landfall in West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts.

If the system develop into a cyclone, it will named Remal, which means ‘sand’ in Arabic. It is unlikely to have any direct impact on Odisha. There is, however, a forecast for light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places in Balasore district of Odisha during May 25-27.
