Kabul: Thursday’s deadly attack near the Kabul airport was carried out by a single suicide bomber. There was no second explosion at a nearby hotel as was reported earlier, the Pentagon said on Friday.
The attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State’s Afghan affiliate ISIS-Khorosan, killed 13 US troops, at least 80 Afghans and foreign nationals of some other countries.
According to reports, the toll has crossed 100.
It was the first time that first US military suffered casualties in Afghanistan since February 2020 and the deadliest incident for American troops in the war-torn country in a decade.
US General Frank McKenzie, head of US Central Command, had said on Thursday that initial information suggested two suicide bombers had attacked the airport gate and the nearby Baron hotel.
“I can confirm for you that we do not believe that there was a second explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, that it was one suicide bomber,” Army Major General William Taylor told reporters on Friday. He added that US troops wounded in the attack were being treated in Germany.
