Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over Bay of Bengal crossed the coast of Digha in West Bengal between 7 pm and 8 pm on Friday.
Stating this in a tweet, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the system will continue its direction of movement and move across West Bengal, North Odisha and Jharkhand towards North Chhatisgarh during next 24hrs. Then, the deep depression will weaken gradually, it added.
The system was active over the north-west Bay of Bengal, about 200 km east-southeast of Balasore in Odisha and 140 km east-southeast of Digha in the afternoon. The IMD had forecast that squally surface wind reaching up to 55-65 kmph was expected in coastal areas and 30-40kmph in interior districts under the influence of the deep depression.
Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena said heavy rainfall was continuing in North Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak district. Two NDRF and ODRAF teams have been sent to Balasore to carry out rescue and relief operations if necessary, he added.
In a nowcast warning released at 10.10 pm, the IMD has issued orange warning with a forecast that light to moderate rain/thundershowers with one or two intense/heavy spells are likely to affect some parts of Boudh, Sonepur, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Cuttack (including city), Kandhamal, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts during next 3 hours.
