Deep Depression To Weaken In 12 Hours; Very Heavy Rain May Continue In Odisha For 2 Days

Bhubaneswar: Isolated very heavy rainfall may continue in Odisha for two days as the Deep Depression over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to weaken into a depression during the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

“The Deep Depression over Gangetic West Bengal moved slowly northwestward with a speed of 3 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 5.30 am over the same region, 40 km south of Bankura (West Bengal), 90 km east-northeast of Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) and 180 km east of Ranchi (Jharkhand). It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and weaken into a depression during the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it will continue to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh during the subsequent 24 hours,” according to the morning bulletin.

The weather agency further said that isolated very heavy rainfall may occur in Odisha on September 16-17. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in the state on September 16.

On Sunday, the IMD had forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda on September 16.

Heavy rainfall warning was also issued for at isolated places in Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh and Angul districts.

It also warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas, possibility of damage to unmetalled roads and kutcha houses. Waterlogging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion are also likely in urban areas during this period.

Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely over north Bay of Bengal and along & off north Odisha coasts till night of September 15. It is likely to become 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph by the evening of September 16 and decrease thereafter. Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely to prevail over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand & north Odisha till September 15 night, decrease gradually becoming 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph from morning of September 16 and decrease thereafter, it had added.
