Cape Town: Off-spinner Deepti Sharma achieved a fantastic milestone on Wednesday, becoming the first Indian – male or female — to bag 100 wickets in T20 Internationals as the women in blue posted their second straight win in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
The seasoned allrounder turned in a matchwinning spell of 3/15 in 4 overs to restrict the West Indies to 118/6. India reached the target with 11 balls to spare, thanks to Richa Ghosh’s unbeaten 44 off 32 balls and skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s 33.
Deepti reached her special ‘century’ when she castled Aly Fletcher in the final over of the innings.
She surpassed even the Indian men, among whom Yuzvendra Chahal (91 wickets) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (90 wickets) are closest to the 100-mark.
Brief scores: West Indies 118/6 in 20 overs (Stafanie Taylor 42; Deepti Sharma 3/15). India 119/4 in 18.1 overs (Richa Ghosh 44*, Harmanpreet Kaur 33; Karishma Ramharack 2/14).
Result: India won by 6 wickets.
