New Delhi: The Delhi high Court on Thursday discharged RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy of the criminal contempt petition initiated for his allegedly offending tweets against Justice S Muralidhar, who is currently serving as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, the Bar and Bench reported.
Posting the hearing for July 13, the court had favoured closing the 2018 contempt case against the editor of a Chennai-based Tamil news magazine. “This contempt has been pending since 2018… Our view is that this gentleman (S. Gurumurthy) against whom you’re alleging contempt has appeared before the court, he has expressed his remorse. Sometimes it is important to put a quietus to all this,” observed the division bench of Justice Sidharth Mridul and Justice Gaurang Kanth.
It had also asked the counsel for the petitioner- Delhi High Court Bar Association- to ask the association’s secretary whether he is keen to follow this criminal proceeding or not.
Notably, the high court had earlier dubbed his tweets in connection with the judge’s decision, granting interim protection from arrest to Karti Chidambaram, the son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, in the INX Media money laundering case, as “mischievous”.
The division bench earlier in April this year had also ‘discharged’ Indian Film Director Vivek Agnihotriin the suo-motu criminal contempt case initiated against him in connection with relief provided by Justice S Muralidhar to UAPA-accused Gautam Navlakha.
