Bhubaneswar: Odisha may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for two days as the Depression over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to cross north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur close to Kalingapatnam around midnight on Saturday.
The system had moved northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during the last 3 hours and was about 80 km south-southeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 120 km east of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 180 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha) at 8.30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather agency has sounded orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning for isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts till 8.30 am on Sunday. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) along with thunderstorm and lightning may also occur at isolated places in Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.
It has also warned of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpass road, poor visibility during intense spell of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas. There is also a possibility of some damages to un-metalled roads and wall collapse of vulnerable kutchha houses. Damages to vegetables and horticultural crops and mudslides/landslides in vulnerable hilly areas are also likely.
Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is likely to continue at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Nuapada districts during the subsequent 24 hours.
