Berhampur: A doctor was found hanging inside a room at his in-laws’ place under Gosaninuagaon police limits in Odisha’s Berhampur on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Dr Surendra Nath Rath. An alumnus of MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Berhampur, he was serving as joint director at Gajapati district headquarters hospital in Paralakhemundi.
According to sources, his in-laws knocked on the door when Surendra did not come out of the room for long. Since there was no response, they broke it open and found his body hanging from the ceiling fan. On being informed, police reached the spot and sent the body to MKCG MCH for postmortem. “Preliminary investigation by police suggest that the death was due to hanging. The exact cause will be revealed after autopsy,” informed Dr Sudeepa Das of MKCG MCH.
The reason behind the alleged death by suicide is yet to be ascertained.
Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M told the media that a case of unnatural death has been registered. “There could be some family dispute. Preliminary investigation also revealed that he might be suffering from depression. We are probing the case from all angles,” he added.
