Berhampur: Surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital’s Sitalapalli campus in Odisha’s Ganjam district successfully conducted a complex spine surgery on an obese patient.
The surgical team, comprising of specialists in neurosurgery, cardiology and nephrology, faced a unique challenge as the patient with severe spinal issues also had cardiac and nephrological issues.
The team members collaborated seamlessly to conduct two supra major spine surgeries on the patient, who weighed 130 kg. They performed a cervical laminectomy, lumbar laminectomy and post spinal fixation in a single session.
Dr Suryapratap Singh Tomar, neurosurgeon at IMS and SUM Hospital Bhubaneswar and Dr Ranjit Patra, orthopaedic surgeon at the Sitalapalli campus, conducted the surgery which required advanced surgical skill and careful perioperative management to mitigate risks associated with the patient’s comorbid conditions.
Post surgery, the patient has been showing significant improvement in mobility and pain reduction.
The Sitalapalli campus of IMS and SUM, which was inaugurated earlier this year, has emerged as highly dependable hospital for patients of south Odisha with complex medical issues.
