Jeypore: A dreaded criminal was arrested following a brief exchange of fire with police near Purunagarh bypass in Jeypore of Koraput district on Tuesday.
The accused has been identified as Shiva Shankar Panigrahi alias Jitu Kana.
Acting on a tip-off about the presence of Jitu and his associate near the bypass, a police team raided the area at around 4:45 am in an attempt to nab him.
The duo, travelling on a motorcycle, opened two rounds of fire on the police personnel. Following this, the cops retaliated and managed to catch hold of Jitu.
However, his associate managed to give policemen the slip.
Though no one was injured in the crossfire, the police vehicle was damaged after a bullet fired by the criminals hit it.
One country-made revolver, two fired cartridges and a live ball ammunition were seized from Jitu’s possession.
Police sources informed that Jitu is involved in a number of criminal cases. He was wanted by officials of different police stations.
