Berhampur: A dreaded gangster and his associates managed to escape after opening fire and hurling bombs at a team of policemen near a village in Ganjam district on Thursday.
Briefing the media about the incident, Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra said acting on a tip-off about the gangster Kuna Behera and his men camping at a hill near Chadeyagarh village under Digapahandi block, a team of policemen of Digapahandi police station led by the IIC raided the area in the morning.
As the police team arrived at the spot, Kuna and his gang members opened fire and hurled bombs at them. The police did not return fire as there were villagers between them and the gangsters. Taking this opportunity, the anti-socials managed to escape.
Later, police seized three 9 mm imported bullets, eight country-made bullets, two country-made guns and other articles from the place.
Stating that no policemen was injured in the firing, Mishra said a search operation has been launched to nab the anti-socials.
“Kuna, who has unleashed a reign of terror in the areas under Digapahandi and Golanthara police limits, has more than 25 cases of murder, attempt to murder and dacoity against him. Efforts are on to arrest him very soon,” the SP said.
