DU Gives Marching Orders To Ad-Hoc Teachers

New Delhi: In a big blow to ad-hoc teachers, three affiliated colleges under the University of Delhi have terminated their services.

Notices were issued on Wednesday by Aryabhatta College, Lady Shri Ram College and Keshav Mahavidyala saying that the services of the teachers engaged on ad-hoc basis will no longer be required, the Indian Express has reported.

Seven ad-hoc teachers of the above two colleges will be affected by this development. Keshav Mahavidyala has not specified the number of teachers who would go jobless.

The development comes despite the Ministry of Human Resource and Development assuring a delegation earlier this month that UGC will amend recruitment rules which could give level playing field to ad-hoc teachers in matters of recruitment.

However, college principals told Indian Express they have not received any official communication in this regard and have only heard about it through social media and news channels.

“We have only heard about it via the news and social media. As December 16 was the last day of the semester, we had to tell these teachers their services are no longer required. If the situation is clarified by DU or MHRD in the next few weeks, we shall extend their appointment in the next semester,” Aryabhatta College principal Manoj Sinha told the newspaper.

Ad-hoc teachers went on a massive protest in December first week, protesting a letter issued by the university in August, favouring the appointment of guest faculties over ad-hoc teachers against new vacancies arising for the first time in 2019-20 till permanent recruitment takes place.

Following the direction, several colleges had stopped renewing appointment letters of ad-hoc teachers and release their salaries.
