Bhubaneswar: Earth Hour, an hour on a particular day when individuals and businesses voluntarily switch off their lights to spread the message of climate change, began in Sydney in 2007. This global sustainability movement was observed in over 10,000 cities across 180 countries last year.
Bhubaneswar is one of the few cities that have been observing Earth Hour since 2007. Here households, government buildings, monuments and businesses switch off their non-essential lights for an hour in the evening to raise awareness about saving the planet. This year too, the city has geared up to participate in the global movement.
In 2018, global landmarks such as Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, Granada’s Alhambra in Spain, Rio de Janiero’s Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, Athens’ Acropolis in Greece, India Gate in New Delhi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and Sydney’s Opera House switched off their lights in support.
How To Observe Earth Hour?
Simply switch off non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday (March 30).
