Cuttack: The ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment began at the SCB Medical College and Hospital late on Saturday night.
Sources in the hospital said that the ECMO treatment of a woman of Nishintakoili area of Cuttack district began at the Cardiothoracic ward.
The woman afflicted with COVID-19 was admitted to the SCB COVID ward a few days ago. But as her condition turned critical, she was put on ventilator support.
The hospital authorities have formed a team of doctors to identify the patients who need ECMO treatment.
Dedicating nine ECMO machines at the SCB on Friday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had said that the state government will bear all expenses and facilitate ECMO treatment to all critical COVID patients at SCB for free. We have to remain more cautious to battle the third wave.
He said that with the installation of the ECMO machines, SCB is the first government hospital in Odisha and the largest unit in eastern India.
