New Delhi: Election schedule for Lok Sabha and some state assemblies will be announced at 5 PM on Sunday. A Press Information Bureau (PIB) bulletin said the Election Commission of India has called a press conference this evening.
The model code of conduct will come into immediate effect after the dates are announced.
Assembly elections in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls.
According to sources in the commission, the polls could be held in seven to eight phases between April and May. Notification for the first phase could be issued by the end of March for voting sometime in early April.
The commission has held several review meetings across the country in the last few weeks to gear up its machinery. The required EVMs and paper trail machines are in place to be deployed in nearly 10 lakh polling stations across 543 Lok Sabha constituencies.
Earlier in the day, the commission approved 39 symbols of registered un-recognised political parties for the upcoming elections.
