Baripada: An adult elephant was found dead in Similipal National Park in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj on Sunday.
According to sources, the adult female elephant was part of a herd which was moving in the tiger reserve for the last few days. After the local people found the elephant lying dead in Kabatghai area of the reserve, they informed the Forest department.
A team of Forest officials went to the spot and started investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death of the pachyderm. While they ruled out poaching, they suspected from preliminary investigation that the wild animal might have died due to anthrax.
The Forest officials collected samples of blood from the dead elephant and sent those for test. They said the cause of the elephant’s death after getting the blood test report.
