Keonjhar: A hearing impaired girl was trampled to death in a forest near a village in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Friday.
As per reports, the villagers of Siriabahal village under Telkoi block of the district had gone to pick mushroom from the nearby forest in the morning. Bidesh Pantheir’s son Bidyadhar and daughters Sasakha and Bisakha, both hearing impaired, also accompanied the villagers.
While the villagers spread out in the forest to spot the mushrooms, Bidyadhar came face to face with an elephant. As the tusker chased him, he started running and alerted others at pitch of his voice.
Though others ran away on hearing Bidyadhar, Bisakha and Sasakha could not hear him and went closer to the elephant. On finding Sasakha near it, the tusker trampled her. While she died on the spot, Bisakha managed to escape.
On being informed about the incident, Forest officials along with police went to the village. They managed to herd the elephant away.
The police sent Sasakha’s body for post-mortem and the Forest officials assured her family of compensation as per the government provisions.
