Bhubaneswar: Dr Jagan Mohan Satpathy, retired Dean of Research and Extension at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), passed away on June 11 at the age of 94.
He was suffering from old age medical complications.
He is survived by wife Uma, two daughters, sons-in-law, a son and daughter-in-law, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Dr JM Satpathy, as he was fondly known to friends and colleagues, was born in a village near Salepur, Odisha. He did his Bachelor’s degree from Andhra University and started his career as lecturer in OUAT.
He then got enrolled at Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) in Pusa, Delhi, for post-graduation diploma before going to Columbia Agriculture University, Missouri (USA) for his Master’s degree in Entomology.
Thereafter, he completed his PhD at OUAT.
An extremely passionate educationalist and an able administrator, Dr Satpathy travelled throughout Odisha for various projects of agriculture and entomology for OUAT.
He was instrumental in building a strong research foundation at several agriculture research institutes in the state.
More than 100 of his papers were published in reputed national and international journals.
OUAT honoured him in 2012 with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his outstanding contribution to agriculture research.
Post retirement, he led a quiet life, gardening and spending time with grandchildren at his Bhubaneswar residence.
