Berhampur: CPI leader and former Odisha MLA Narayan Reddy was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the death of a Reserve Inspector during a police-public clash in 1998.
The court of Berhampur ADJ-3 awarded life imprisonment to a total of 13 people, including Reddy, in connection with the death of Police Reserve Inspector Binay Meher during the clash.
The former Chhatrapur MLA expressed unhappiness over the court’s decision and said they will appeal against the verdict. “We are disappointed. I will go to the higher court to get justice,” said Narayan Reddy..
As per the case details, the clash between police and public turned violent during a meeting at Sindhi village over land acquisition by a private company for a project. Bombs were also allegedly hurled at the site. Police RI Binay Meher was killed in the incident. A case under section 302 of IPC was registered at the Chhatrapur Police Station in this connection.
