Bhubaneswar: Contributing his bit to make the upcoming FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 memorable and beautify the venues that will host the matches, sculptor Maheswar Maharana is making giant fibreglass hockey sticks at his work yard in Mukunda Nagar in Odisha’s Puri.
These sculptures will be installed at prominent junctions during the quadrennial event in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela where matches will be played.
Along with 22 assistants, Maharana has been sculpting these 22-foot-long hockey sticks since the trophy tour reached the City of Temples. Taking to the media about his unique effort, Maharana said, “I am inspired. I was in awe of the World Cup trophy when it was here. My colleagues and I resolved to contribute 16 hockey stick insignias for the event on behalf of the people of Puri.”
Once complete, the sticks will be transported to Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. “The sticks are made of fibreglass material which lends a realistic look even from a distance,” the sculptor added.
